A man who died outside a north Raleigh nightclub early Thursday was part of an armed group that confronted the club's security guards, according to a 911 call police released Friday.

Devon Maleek Bowser, 28, was shot and killed at Club Amnesia, at 1606 North Market Drive, shortly before 3:30 a.m., police said.

Investigators said Bowser engaged in a verbal confrontation with nightclub employees, left and then returned with a gun. He threatened to shoot inside the club and the security guard standing by the door, but when he pointed the gun at the guard, the guard and another security guard fired at him, police said.

"He said, 'Move. You don't think I'll shoot you in the face?'" a Club Amnesia worker who called 911 quoted Bowser as saying.

The caller said Bowser wasn't alone, noting "a bunch of his friends" backed him up, and some were carrying semiautomatic, assault-style rifles.

"We returned fire at close range," the caller said.

After the shooting, the group of five or six men with Bowser scattered, with some driving away in a dark-colored vehicle and others jumping a nearby fence and running off, the caller said.

"They returned fire for quite some time," he said.

No charges have been filed in the shooting as of Friday. Police said more investigation and consultation with the Wake County District Attorney’s Office will take place before any final determinations are made.

The shooting was one of two at bars early Thursday. The other occurred outside of the Bison Bar, on Whitaker Mill Road, about 3 miles from Club Amnesia.

A 36-year-old Raleigh man was shot in the head and was in critical condition at WakeMed, and a 40-year-old woman from Clayton was shot in the neck, police said.

Marquise Deon Alston-Douglas, 27, was charged Friday with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill in connection with that shooting.
