Eighty-five dogs and puppies seized last month from a suspected puppy mill in Chatham County are ready to find loving forever homes.

In January, authorities received reports of concerning sounds from a property with many dogs.

Following a search warrant executed on Oakley Church Road, the Chatham County Sheriff's Office, along with Animal Rescue Corps and BISSELL Pet Foundation, rescued a total of 214 dogs.

Some of the dogs were already dead when investigators arrived on the scene.

Deputies also found animals suffering from starvation, dehydration, parasites, severe matting, malnutrition or a combination of multiple health concerns. Some dogs were covered in urine and feces.

The property owner, Alicia Dawn Culberson, faces 10 counts of animal cruelty.

The 85 dogs are prepared for adoption after receiving veterinary care, medical treatment and behavioral support at the Animal Rescue Corps Rescue Center near Nashville, Tennessee.

However, the remaining dogs are still considered evidence and will stay in the care of the Chatham County Sheriff's Office until the legal case concludes.

"Our commitment is to animal welfare and upholding the law," Sheriff Mike Roberson said. "While these dogs are evidence, our partnership with Animal Rescue Corps ensures their well-being throughout the legal process."
