At least 28 flights were canceled Tuesday at Raleigh-Durham International Airport and hundreds of travelers were facing delays as a winter storm hits the Northeast.

Most of the flights impacted at RDU were heading to or from the Northeast, especially destinations like New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia and Boston, which have already seen multiple inches of snow.

WRAL News contacted the airlines seeing the biggest impact, including Delta and American, to confirm whether or not weather is behind the travel issues.

People traveling on Tuesday should play close attention to arrival and departure times, which could change quickly.

More than 1,000 flights were canceled nationwide Tuesday morning, mostly at the airports in the New York City area and in Boston. Accidents were reported across the region, and several states were banning tandem and empty tractor-trailers from highways.

The highest snowfall totals, around 8 inches and possibly more in some locations, were expected from the northern New York City suburbs to Connecticut, Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts, according to the National Weather Service.
