A mother is charged after police said her 2-year-old son shot himself during nap time.
Burlington police said the toddler was shot around 1:50 p.m. Thursday when the boy was napping in the bed with his mother. Officers said his mother was asleep when the toddler found an unsecured handgun and shot himself.
The boy did not sustain life-threatening injuries and was released from the hospital, police said.
Police said his mother, Stephanie Byrd, 36, was charged with failure to secure a firearm and contributing to the neglect of a minor.
