The storms that rocked the Triangle overnight largely cleared by dawn Monday, but more rough weather is on the way.

There is at least a chance for thunderstorms Monday and Tuesday afternoon, with the severe threat covering most of the state on Tuesday.

"This afternoon, more storms will roll through with the additional threat for wind damage and trees down," WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said.

Monday's forecast calls for cloudy skies through the morning, then a mostly cloudy to partly sunny afternoon with scattered showers and storms. "A few of the storms could again be strong and dump localized, heavy rainfall," Gardner said.

The chance for precipitation in Raleigh stays at about 50 percent through the daylight hours, then dips overnight and picks back up for Tuesday.

The forecast high is for temperatures in the mid-80s Monday, and warmer is not necessarily better.

"More sun brings the greater chance for storms later to get severe," Gardner said.

Much of the Triangle and eastern North Carolina is under a Level 1 (on a scale of 5) risk for severe storms through Monday, meaning damaging winds, heavy rain and flooding are possible.

That risk extends over the bulk of the state through Tuesday evening.

Heavy downpours overnight produced up to three inches of rain in some areas, and, in many parts of central North Carolina, already saturated ground makes trees easier to topple.

Trees fell early Monday on Medlin Drive and Catawba Street in Raleigh, leaving almost 30 customers without power. Three right lanes on Interstate 440 westbound near Lake Boone Trail were blocked overnight due to another downed tree. At one point overnight, all four lanes Atlantic Avenue at Hodges Street were covered in standing water.
