State Fair Taste Test: Texas Pete Glazed Mini Donuts

Texas Pete Glazed Mini Donuts
RALEIGH, N.C. — Like Krispy Kreme, Texas Pete was created in Winston Salem, but that's probably the ONLY time I've ever paired donuts and red pepper sauce. That's why the Texas Pete Glazed Mini Donuts were at the top of the new foods to try on my N.C. State Fair bucket list.

After seeking out the S2 Concessions stand, I stood watching the mini donuts receive their Texas Pete-infused glaze treatment. I questioned whether I was actually ready for the combo of super-sweet mini donuts and the sauce's heat. I'm a fan of both individually, but would they work together? Then suddenly I was at the front of the line placing my order for the concoction.

First of all, the donuts themselves were warm and soft. The Texas Pete glaze brought the heat I expected and was well-balanced with the glaze's sweetness. I totally underestimated how delicious they would be, but everything was right about this decadent and decidedly North Carolina dessert.

If you don't like Texas Pete, you're not going to like these donuts, but if you were raised on it like many North Carolinians, don't hesitate to order these. Bonus points if you wash them down with a Cheerwine slushie.
