RALEIGH, N.C. — Students at Saint Augustine's University will begin the Spring semester with remote classes for the first two weeks – and a new interim president.

"To uphold our principles of transparency and effective communication with all stakeholders, I am writing to provide you with an update on the start of the Spring 2024 semester," wrote interim president Dr. Marcus Burgess in a message to students. "While classes will begin as planned on Wednesday, January 10, all of your classes will be remote (online) for the first two weeks of the semester."

Classes will shift back to in-person on Monday, Jan. 22 and that students may return to campus between Jan. 19 and 21 during the hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Burgess says the decision to make the first two weeks remote will ensure the school's residence halls and classrooms are in the best condition possible to give students the unparalleled experience they deserve.

"This delay will allow us to put in place all necessary measures to guarantee a smooth and enriching return to campus life," he writes.

Burgess says he understands the change may cause adjustments to some students' plans.

"I want to express my profound empathy for any inconvenience this may cause," he writes. "Every decision is rooted in our collective well-being and the promise of a vibrant and fulfilling academic journey at SAU."

This announcement comes as the university faces accreditation issues. a lawsuit from a former coach and an EEOC charge of discrimination from former president Dr. Christine Johnson McPhail.

Burgess says any students that return next week will not be turned away, and that the University would find a location for them.
