Jacksonville, FL --- Cameron Maybin's two-out single in the eighth inning knocked in the winning run, enabling the Carolina Mudcats to split their Wednesday night doubleheader at the Baseball Grounds with Jacksonville.

The Mudcats (8-7), who dropped the opening game 4-3 after squandering numerous scoring opportunities, battled back despite losing a seventh inning 2-1 lead when James Tomlin singled home the tying run with one out against Todd Doolittle (W, 2-1). Doolittle fanned Mark Bellhorn with runners at first and third, then retired the side on a popfly to force extra innings.

With the split, Carolina sits three games behind first-place Tennessee, which beat Huntsville with two runs in the ninth on Wednesday night. Carolina hosts the Smokies in a four-game series starting Friday night.

John Raynor went 3-3 with a walk and a run scored to lead the Mudcats in the opener which saw the Suns (7-8) push across the winning run against Chris Volstad (L, 4-4) in the sixth.

Jeff Gogal (S, 1) registered his first professional save by pitching the eighth inning of the nightcap.

The Mudcats play their final game at the Baseball Grounds this regular season on Thursday night at 7:05 PM ET with Brett Sinkbeil (3-7) making the start.
