Junior college transfer Inga Muciniece has signed with N.C. State and will play for the Wolfpack women’s basketball team this fall, the school announced Tuesday.
Muciniece, pronounced Moose-a-KNEE-et-SAY, is a native of Ventspils, Latvia. She is a 6-foot-5 center who played the last two years at Barton County Community College in Great Bend, Kan.
She averaged 10.3 points and a team-leading 11.9 rebounds as a sophomore on a 34-4 team. She also blocked a school-record 119 shots.
Muciniece averaged 9.9 points and 10.0 rebounds in a 27-3 freshman season for the Cougars.
Muciniece becomes the third member of the N.C. State signing class, joining Bonae Holston of Newport News, Va., and Michelle Davis of Cleveland, Tenn.
The signing of Muciniece is an important one for the Wolfpack. State's top player this past season was 6-1 Khadijah Whittington, who was a senior. Whittington averaged 16.8 points and 11.7 rebounds for the Pack, which finished 21-13 and reached the Women's NIT.
State returns its backcourt in Shayla Fields (13.5 points per game) and Nikitta Gartrell (9.6) but will be looking for production up front with Whittington departing.
