Antonio Pettigrew, who is scheduled to testify he used performance-enhancing drugs while competing as a sprinter, remains an assistant coach for the North Carolina men’s track and field program.
According to California court documents, Pettigrew will testify that he used the drugs with the knowledge of his coach at the time, Trevor Graham (pictured above). Graham is scheduled to go on trial May 19 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.
Steve Kirschner, UNC’s associate athletics director for communications, said the athletics department is looking into the matter but does not have a set policy for handling an issue like this one.
“We’d handle it on a case-by-case basis,” he said.
UNC has a meet scheduled for Friday in Chapel Hill.
Kirschner said his understanding is Pettigrew’s drug use would have happened long before he worked at UNC. Pettigrew is in his second year as a Tar Heel assistant.
According to court records, Pettigrew "will testify that he was a professional track and field athlete coached by the defendant and that the defendant encouraged him to take illegal and banned performance-enhancing drugs and referred him to Angel Guillermo Heredia to obtain those drugs.
"He obtained and used illegal and banned enhancing drugs from Heredia with the defendant’s knowledge.”
Pettigrew is a four-time world champion who helped the U.S. win a gold medal in 2000 in the 4x400. He has not returned calls to WRAL.
