Court document says Pettigrew used performance-enhancing drugs with Graham

Trevor Graham

The witness list for the upcoming trial of track coach Trevor Graham includes current North Carolina coach Antonio Pettigrew and says Pettigrew will testify that he used performance-enhancing drugs as an athlete.

University of North Carolina officials are not commenting on the subject. Pettigrew, who ran track at St.Augustine’s, is in his second year as an assistant coach at UNC.
Steve Kirschner, UNC’s associate athletic director for communications, said the school doesn’t have enough information to comment.

“We don’t know enough about it,” Kirschner said.

Pettigrew did not return a phone call from WRAL. Kirschner said athletics director Dick Baddour would not comment on Pettigrew.

Graham once coached Marion Jones and other elite track athletes, including Pettigrew.

Graham’s trial is scheduled to begin May 19 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.

A clerk at the California court read a part of the witness list to WRAL. According to that document, filed May 2, Pettigrew "will testify that he was a professional track and field athlete coached by the defendant and that the defendant encouraged him to take illegal and banned performance-enhancing drugs and referred him to Angel Guillermo Heredia to obtain those drugs.

"He obtained and used illegal and banned enhancing drugs from Heredia with the defendant’s knowledge …”

Pettigrew is a four-time world champion who helped the U.S. win a gold medal in 2000 in the 4x400.

He is one of seven elite athletes once trained by Graham who will testify that Graham set them up with performance-enhancing drugs, according to The Associated Press. Graham has pleaded not guilty to making false statements when he told investigators he never obtained drugs from Heredia, according to the AP.
