Ravenscroft junior could play on USA basketball team

Knightdale vs. Southern Durham - GSK

Ravenscroft junior Ryan Kelly has been selected to try-out for the USA U18 National Team in July.

Kelly was one of thirty players across the country selected to compete for 12 roster spots. Try-outs will be held in Washington, D.C., on July 1-3.

"I am honored to be asked to participate in the USA Basketball U18 tryouts," Kelly said in a written statement released by Ravenscroft. "I don't think there is any greater honor than to represent your country in any way that you can."

A total of 16 players will be selected after the three day period to continue training with the team, and the final team will depart for Formosa, Argentina in time for the July 11-13 FIBA Americas U18 Championship for Men.

The 6-foot-9 power forward averaged 23.7 points, 8.1 rebounds and 3.7 blocks per game last season. Kelly was named the TISAC Conference Player of the Year for the 2007-08 season, and was also named to the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 3-A All-State team.

During the 2006-07 season, as a sophomore, Kelley recorded 14 points, 9 rebounds, and 4.5 blocked shots each time out.

Rivals.com ranks Kelly as the No. 14 power forward in the Class of 2009, and the No. 44 best player overall.

The Ravens will participate in the 2008 GlaxoSmithKline Holiday Invitational during Kelly's senior year, and he will be one of the top prospects at the tournament.

Kelly reports offers from N.C. State, Notre Dame, Stanford, Vanderbilt, Virginia, and Davidson. North Carolina's Roy Williams has also actively recruited Kelly, according to Rivals.com, but the Tar Heels have not made him an offer.

Kelly, along with Word of God star John Wall, received national attention recently while on the AAU circuit with D-One Sports. Kelly and Wall were named to the all-tournament team during the Pitt Jam Fest in Pittsburgh.

"I look forward to competing against some of the most talented players in the country and continuing to help keep USA Basketball on top," Kelly said.
