Embattled West Charlotte football program hires next coach

Richmond County vs. West Charlotte

Months after Maurice Flowers resigned as the head football coach at West Charlotte, the Lions have hired their next head man.

According to the Charlotte Observer, Independence offensive coordinator Aaron Brand has been hired as the head football coach at West Charlotte.

Brand is from Virginia, and played football at Halifax County High School.

After high school, Brand went on to play quarterback at Emory & Henry for four years. After graduation, he was the quarterbacks coach for five years.

Brand moved to Charlotte in 2001, and he began coaching that same year at West Mecklenburg as the offensive coordinator. Brand left West Mecklenburg to become the baseball coach at Berry in 2003, but returned as the offensive coordinator the following year.

Brand has been the offensive coordinator for the Patriots for the past three years.

Flowers, along with multiple assistant coaches, resigned earlier this year after allegations of recruiting surfaced and ineligible players were found. All of the events unfolded during an intense review of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools eligibility policies.

The Lions went to the 4-A Final in 2006, and lost to Independence in the 4-AA Western Regional Final last season.

Brand will be West Charlotte's third head coach in as many years.
