CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Carolina Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams wanted to run onto the floor in the closing seconds of college basketball's national championship game.
Williams' alma mater, Memphis, had a 3-point lead as Kansas brought the ball up the floor. Williams, who rushed for over 6,000 yards at Memphis, was in the crowd in San Antonio.
"I wanted to commit the foul myself, but if had run out there I figure it would have been like two technical foul shots," Williams said Saturday.
"That and a set of handcuffs," added Panthers coach John Fox.
Memphis didn't foul, and Mario Chalmers hit a 3-pointer with 2.1 seconds left to force overtime. Kansas went on to win the title, 75-68 over Williams' Tigers.
"I was in my seat trying to foul the guy when Kansas had the ball," Williams said. "I was like, 'Foul! Foul!' I would have got on the court but the security guard was right there."
