PINEHURST — As a lead up to the U.S. Amateur in August, Jamie Lovemark, the 2007 NCAA Division I individual champion and sixth-ranked amateur from Southern California, took medalists honors at the 108th North & South Amateur Championship.

Lovemark finished at 5-under 136 and then won a one-hole playoff over 21st-ranked Cameron Tringale of Georgia Tech to claim the No. 2 seed heading into Wednesday's match play format. After stroke play qualifying on Nos. 2 and 4, six rounds of match play will take place exclusively on No. 2. Reigning champion Phillip Mollica of Anderson, S.C., is the top seed after receiving a bye through stroke play.

Those players with two-day scores of 145 and above — only 4-over par — were guaranteed spots in match play rounds. Fourteen players scoring 146 vied for the final 12 spots in match play.

NOTES: Zack Byrd of Raleigh eagled the 18th hole of No. 2 Tuesday to make the cut by one stroke at 145. ... Local notable, 49-year-old Pine Needles/Mid Pines CEO, Kelly Miller shot 68-73–141 to make the cut. ... Andrew Guiliani of New York, N.Y., made the cut with 76-67–143. ... All four members of the second-ranked Southern Cal team that were in the field advanced to match play — Lovemark, Rory Hie, Bo DeHuff and Tom Glissmeyer all shot under par in today’s round. ... 1995 and 1996 North & South Amateur champion Paul Simson of Raleigh shot 69-75–144 to enter match play. ... Drew Younts of Stokesdale fired 67-70–137.
