Friday night lights getting crowded

Appalachian State has announced that they will play a game with Wofford of Halloween night, televised on ESPN2.

Normally, this would not be a big deal, but this year, Halloween falls on a Friday night - the night that is reserved for high school football across the country.

The game, which will be played at Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone, is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m., the same time that numerous high school football games across the state will be going on, and it is sure to draw attendance and attention away from high school football - especially in the western part of the state.

ESPN2 has been broadcasting these obscure Friday night games since 2004. Last year, No. 5 West Virginia played No. 18 South Florida on a Friday night, and it ended up being ESPN2's second-highest rating since they began showing college football games.

Charlie Adams, the executive director of the N.C. High School Athletic Association, put out a written statement on Wednesday morning explaining the Association's stance on the topic. "There has been no change in the position of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association and its concern about televising college football games on Friday night," Adams said, "We do not support any college or university televising a football game in the traditional Friday night high school football slot."

Adams did acknowledge that Appalachian State has given the NCHSAA and its member schools enough time to change games if need be.

The NCHSAA shares the same concern I do - the fact that this may be becoming a trend.

Maybe the folks at ESPN don't realize it, but you can't have college football without high school football. And if college football games are consistently held on Friday night, it is going to take away from the high school football market.

Sure, one game on a Friday night isn't going to make or break high school football, but what if it becomes a double-header, a triple-header, or something like Monday Night Football for the NFL? More people across the country are going to want to watch college football than high school football - especially if it is a game of substance.

"We want to emphasize that we hope that this is not the beginning of a consistent pattern of games being played and televised in North Carolina on the primary night that high school teams play, because we believe that could really damage our programs," Adams added.

How nice of them to give high schools a chance to change THEIR schedules. I guess App State is so good now that they absolutely don't mind thumbing their noses at the high schools. Here's hoping they get waxed regularly. Go for 100 in that opener, LSU! cgreen April 30, 2008 2:51 p.m. Report abuse

Yes, I can tell that Coach Green will treat ASU recruiters fairly. Only wishing Leesville Rd. athletes the best in spite of their coach.

HS's DO have booster clubs, and account for about 10% of the athletic depts. budgets. Gates account for about 32% of budgets.

HS sports prepare athletes for college sports. As noted, HS programs don't have boosters. They rely on public funds and gate receipts to pay for the programs. Public funds being squeezed or even completely taken away. This equates to college football shooting itself in the foot.

Yes, HS football could move to Thursday. Then JV would have to move to Wednesday. Then Soccer would move to Tuesday and JV soccer to Monday.

There are a lot of schools/games out there. There are a lot of channels out there. Is this the best all these educated minds can come up with?

"And if college football games are consistently held on Friday night, it is going to take away from the high school football market."

That is true, but things change. The automobile took away from the buggy whip market too. It annoys me when people think they have the right to the preservation of some institution or business (at the expense of others) just because it has "traditionally" been that way. If HS Football can't contend with college games on Friday night, it will have to adapt or die. Just like everyone and everything else. Why should HS football be exempt from change?

This all amounts to a bunch of "poor me" whining from people affraid to face the challenge of changing. Wake up, the world isn't, never was, and never will be fair. Make the best of it that you can.

Here's the dilema. Football is by far the most popular sport in the USA. Saturdays are reserved for the large BCS conferences. All have ties to television and are already taking up the available slots. And in reality, outside of local markets, nobody nationally is going to watch App State over USC (either one). So, for a school like App State, and for ESPN, Friday night is a logical time to show these games.

Many states still play HS football on Saturdays and they do just fine even with college games on TV.

Yeah, it def is a money thing. Friday nights are special, too bad some things can't be left alone

It is a shame that ESPN is pushing college games on Friday night. I still believe that true fans will support their local high school no matter who what game is on tv. Can't wait for the start of HS football!!

GO TROJANS!

The more college football on tv, the better...I wish it was on every night during the season....why not!

Hey Nick - I think you meant "...HAVE college games..."

Not "hae college games."

;)

Must be having a rough day?? Btw, any luck getting Tom on this issue?

Wow... I can't type.

I meant to say, "I don't like it that ESPN is making it a regular thing to hae college games on Friday night."
