After 34 years of covering NCAA Tournament Final Fours, Billy Packer didn't want to leave his post as color analyst with any fanfare or hoopla.
"I didn't it want it to be some kind of sideshow," Packer told The Insiders on Friday. "You've got the Brett Favre thing going on now. I really don't like that kind of stuff," he added.
"When I did my last ACC Tournament game I knew that's the last ACC game I'd broadcast," said Packer. "I was glad nobody asked about it."
The broadcast legend also commented on the popular notion that he was biased in his analysis of certain teams. Packer defended the notion that he was anything but honest, saying he could have cared less who won the games.
"I never worried about whether Carolina fans thought I was for Duke, or if Duke fans thought I was for Carolina," Packer said. "... I never have had a rooting interest."
Speaking of Carolina, Packer's now infamous "It's over" call during UNC's loss to Kansas in the 2008 semi-final game was also discussed. Packer denied any regret for his comments when the Tar Heels trailed the Jayhawks 38-12 in the Final Four.
"When you're sitting there and your'e that close, you can tell by the intensity of the game, you can tell by the look of competitiveness or the fire in the eyes of the guys," he began.
"As that game progressed, so quickly, Kansas not only had a great game plan. They came out and they were a step faster, they were really focused on what they had to do," Packer continued. "I didn't care what happened the rest of the way. That game was over."
When you've seen as much college basketball as Billy Packer has, you've certainly earned the right to comment on the state of the game. Packer was not afraid to be honest about that with The Insiders either.
"I will not miss the direction of the game," Packer told them. "College basketball was great. The teams were great, the players were great and the competition was at a very high level."
Packer's feelings about the current state of the game are referring to the lack of premier upperclassmen staying in college for four years. One of his statements may really resonate with hardcore college basketball fans.
"We'll never see greatness again," he said. "We'll never see great teams again."
