WENDELL, N.C. — A Wendell woman tells WRAL News a sign she posted meant to deter speeding has been stolen after it received a lot of negative attention online.

The sign on Riley Hill Road shared a blunt message: "If you do not slow down, I hope you die on this road."

The sign's owner, Linda Jones, said someone stole it Saturday.

Jones told WRAL News she's seen too many crashes on the road over the years, and her child survived being hit years ago.

Jones said she knows her sign was harsh, but she wanted to get people's attention.

"I'm sorry that might have been a little cruel, but these people passing these cars going 45 mph, they're gonna kill somebody's loved member," Jones described.

WRAL News reported on crashes in this area, including in January 2023 when investigators said a vehicle crossed the center line one night and led to a crash that hurt two people.

In 2018, authorities said a man died after he and his brother crashed their car after drinking while speeding up to 100 mph.
