RALEIGH, N.C. — After a bright, sunny fall weekend, the Triangle may be in for an unwelcome surprise by Monday evening.

According to WRAL meteorologist Aimee Wilmoth, a cold front may trigger some bands of showers and thunderstorms late Monday into early Tuesday, and some localized damaging winds or isolated tornadoes are also possible.

Severe storm risk

"It's been dry this October, so the rain that's headed our way is much needed," Wilmoth said.

Monday will be mostly cloudy and breezy with a few sprinkles or showers possible late afternoon. Areas west and southwest of Raleigh are most likely to see rain, severe weather and winds, which may gust up to 25 mph at times.

Wilmoth said the greatest risk for severe weather in the Triangle will be after about 11 p.m. through the early hours of Tuesday morning.

"Overnight we'll hear some rumbles of thunder and we could have some damaging wind gusts with theses storms as they blow through," she said.

7-Day Forecast

Temperatures on Monday will be similar to those on Sunday, with highs in the mid to upper 70s. The severe weather will continue Tuesday morning before tapering off in the afternoon.

Following the rain, temperatures will cool off with highs in the 60s and lows in the 40s on Wednesday and Thursday.
