FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. — The Fuquay-Varina Police Department is warning citizens of a scam involving phone calls.

"People have reported that they have received phone calls from the Fuquay-Varina Police Department asking them for personal information," the department posted on Facebook. "It appears that whoever is making the phone calls is spoofing our phone number which makes it seem like the phone call is actually coming from us."

The Fuquay-Varina Police Department is not calling citizens or asking for information.

If anyone gets a suspicious call from someone claiming to be a Fuquay-Varina police officer, you can:

  • Ask the caller for his/her name and badge number, and then inform them that you will call them back.
  • Call the non-emergency line at 919-552-3191 and ask for the officer who just called you. Make sure you get their name.

Never give out your personal information over the phone unless you are absolutely sure you know who you are talking to.
