NAPLES, N.C. — Hurricane Irma damaged almost every home in the Naples Estates mobile home park. Samaritan's Purse has dozens of volunteers on the ground in Florida.

A volunteer from Clayton got the call, jumped in his car and drove more than 15 hours straight for what he calls "faith in action."

Clayton resident Donald Grondwalski is one of about 30 volunteers working in the senior community with Samaritan's Purse.

"We've been able to take the tree off the house and take the bent metal off the roof, and we're able to get it cleaned up, and we're going to be putting a tarp on the roof," Grondwalski said.

The volunteers spend every daylight hour sawing, hammering, hauling and going up and down ladders. But they also deal with the emotional devastation from the disaster.

"You're seeing people's lives turned upside down," Grondwalski said. "Their homes are a mess, there's water in their house, and there's a lot of destruction to personal property."

"One of the things I come here for that I've learned is our presence to be there to help somebody is very powerful," he said. "We just do it, and the rest just happens. It's hard to hold back the tears."

As it is senior community, most people can not physically do the clean-up work. If they can't afford having the work done, Samaritan's Purse is free.
