Four Salvation Army mobile feeding kitchens were in Carteret County on Tuesday, each one able to feed up to 1,500 people per day.

Amanda Buck and her son LB, both from Morehead City, have been eating from the trucks since the Salvation Army started distributing meals Sunday.

“Something that's substantial that will hold is so much better than kids running around eating bags of potato chips,” Buck said. “It's not good for them."

There is damage everywhere in the city, and most people haven't had electricity for days.

Bruce Coolbeth, another Morehead City resident, grabbed enough for his family. He's been out of work since Sept. 11.

“No paycheck, no food,” Coolbeth said. “None of the necessities that we need.”

A box of food goes a long way.

"It makes a big difference,” Buck said. "I don't know what we would do without them coming by daily."

Carteret County officials said places east of Beaufort don't have power, cellphone service or internet. County leaders say they'll start communicating with those people through their local fire departments.

Beaufort Elementary School opened Tuesday evening as the second shelter in Carteret County.
