APEX, N.C. — The intersection of US-64 and Richardson Rd. in Apex will look a little different to drivers on Thursday, as a newly-installed traffic signal is now on the site to help decrease the risk of collisions.

Apex Mayor Jacques Gilbert posted an update about the high-risk intersection earlier this month, saying representatives have responded to his plea to get a signal functional as soon as possible, due to the number of serious crashes.

"I appreciate the collaborative efforts of NCDOT, the Developer, and Duke Energy," he wrote. "This has certainly been on our radar."

On Thursday morning, Gilbert announced as of 9 a.m., the intersection will have a new look.

"Let’s go! Full functional traffic signal! Grateful to all who made this happen," he posted. "Thanks for your patience in this long journey."

He posted the before-and-after photos of the intersection.

Gilbert says there's so much construction along that stretch of US-64, including the new Sweetwater community and a new Coca-Cola bottling facility, that they are working on building the infrastructure to keep up with it.

Another major update for the future: Converting the intersection of US-64 and NC-751 into an interchange, which will begin in 2029.

"There is nothing we can’t accomplish when we work together!" he added.
