Ready to ride The Polar Express? Six tips if you're heading to the popular event at the NC Transportation Museum
At Christmas, I love curling up with my kids to read "The Polar Express" or watching Tom Hanks tell the story in the animated version of the now classic book. But, here in North Carolina, you have opportunities to actually experience The Polar Express, including at the N.C. Transportation Museum in Spencer, about two hours from Raleigh.

But, here in North Carolina, you have opportunities to actually experience The Polar Express, including at the N.C. Transportation Museum in Spencer, about two hours from Raleigh. I checked in with Mark Brown, the museum's information and communications specialist, to learn more about this very popular event that involves train rides, dancing chefs, hot chocolate and more.
Wear your pajamas!
In the story of The Polar Express, the hero boy makes his journey to the North Pole in the middle of the night, dressed in his pajamas and robe. Most families attending The Polar Express Train Ride get into the spirit by dressing in their own PJ’s before climbing aboard. Some even have matching outfits for the whole family! It is a great way to get into the spirit before you even leave the house. Be sure to wear shoes with those PJ’s, though. The event involves some walking and your favorite fuzzy slippers might not last through the visit.
Avoid travel delays
With the museum’s location just off I-85, interstate travel delays can occur. Be sure to check your route early to be aware of any traffic issues. Due to event scheduling, the trains must leave precisely on time. As the Conductor said in the story, “I've never been late before, and I am certainly not going to be late tonight!”
Enjoy ALL the event’s offerings
The Polar Express is more than a train ride. Visitors can enjoy activities before and after their trip to the North Pole. PIck up a s'mores packet for $2 each to make your own treat at the fire pits. Enjoy the model railroad layouts, crafts for the kids and an expanded Gift Station with Polar Express memorabilia. And enjoy all the Christmas lights and photo opportunities. If you have purchased a ride time for later in the evening, you still can arrive early to take advantage of those activities.
Get Santa's autograph
The big guy will sign your pre-purchased copy of The Polar Express book by Chris Van Allsburg. The book is available as an add-on option during online ticket purchases. Those that take advantage of this option will have a copy of the book waiting for them upon arrival, signed by Santa. If you've already purchased tickets, you can still add a book purchase by visiting the transportation museum's website. Other merchandise is also available for pre-purchase.
Take all the photos
Aboard the train, there will be several opportunities for kids to interact with Santa, the conductor, and the chefs. Take advantage of all the photo opportunities and then share your experiences on social media using #nctrans.
Prepare for a magical experience
The event sticks closely to the story told in Van Allsburg's book. There will be hot chocolate and cookies, chefs that sing and dance in the aisles of the train, a visit to the North Pole, Santa presenting the first gift of Christmas to each child and more.
