RDU prepares for record spring break travelers

RDU is estimating a 6% increase in the number of travelers this month. Airport officials ask travelers to be sure to arrive at least two hours before your flight.

Airport officials said Mexico and the Caribbean are the most popular spring break destinations from RDU.

Jeff Potter with RDU shared three tips for a smooth airport experience.

"The first is booking your parking online," Potter said. "You can do that at RDU.com. Another thing you can do is download your airline’s mobile app -- that’s the fastest way to get find out important travel updates. Third is getting to the airport early."

"If you can book your parking online you might be able to save yourself time at the airport," Potter said. "But a few minutes can mean the difference between making your flight and not."

This year's trip may cost you more than trips of the past, though. You'll be paying about 5 to 10 cents more for gas this Spring Break compared to last.

The new data shows the average price of gas here in North Carolina is about $3.22 a gallon. Just a month ago, gas prices were under $3 dollars a gallon.
