A Raleigh woman is celebrating big after 5 On Your Side solved a problem that persisted for nearly half a year.

Reggie Jones will receive a nearly $1,200 dollar e-gift card to Lowes Home Improvement after she said a home warranty company failed to fix and replace her fridge.

“Thank God for 5 On Your Side!” said Reggie Jones.

Since September 2023, Jones has dealt with a leaking fridge that rarely stays cold.

“I was throwing away food every two days,” she said. Cooking for her large family during the holidays proved to be especially difficult.

“It was very bad,” she said. “We had 12 turkey wings, cabbage, chick pastry, BBQ chicken, mac and cheese, potato salad. Can you imagine keeping that cool?”

To help cover the cost of home repairs, Jones had a policy with Choice Home Warranty. In exchange for paying a monthly fee, Jones said Choice Home Warranty was supposed to cover the cost of fridge repairs and replacement. For an additional fee, a repair person came to her house thrice but could not fix the problem.

She said Choice Home Warranty refused to offer her a replacement.

“I’m going like ‘Help me, y’all,’” she said.

By the New Year, she was done waiting and began to search for outside help.

“I looked up 5 On Your Side; they work for everyone that’s on television. I said, ‘I’m going to try it and see if it will work for me too,’” Jones said.

5 On Your Side reached out to Choice Home Warranty, pointing out Jones’s policy. Within a few days, Jones received an email telling her she would receive a Lowe’s E-gift card for $1,199.

“They sent me a confirmation letter; I could cry right now. I got testimony; I told everyone, ‘let me tell you what happened to me, thank God for 5 On Your Side,’” Jones said.

Jones is still waiting to receive her e-gift card. 5 On Your Side continues to monitor the situation and push for a prompt delivery.

Is a home warranty worth it?

Jones said she paid $59 per month on her warranty from Choice Home Warranty. That’s $708 a year and up to $3,540 within 5 years, the cost of more than one fridge.

That's why Consumer Reports says, in most cases, you’re better off forgoing a warranty company, putting that money in the bank and creating your home repair fund.

Despite receiving a B-grade from the Better Business Bureau, Choice Home Warranty received a one-star rating out of five in reviews from customers. They have also been sued by the state of Arizona for failing to honor agreements.
