RALEIGH, N.C. — A Raleigh man was arrested Tuesday on charges that he attacked and raped a woman last month.

Kowalski Devereaux Reese, 41, of 4720 Valley Stream Drive, was charged with first-degree forcible rape, first-degree kidnapping, assault on a female, assault by strangulation, common law robbery and possession of stolen goods. He was being held Wednesday in the Wake County jail under a $1.34 million bond.

According to arrest warrants, Reese held a woman against her will, hit her in the face several times and choked her before raping her on Dec. 17. He then stole her cellphone, warrants state.

According to an application for a warrant to search Reese's home and a Toyota Corolla, the woman told police she was trying to sell food stamps on Calvary Drive, off Capital Boulevard, when a man in a white car stopped and said he could help her. She said she reluctantly got into the car, and he drove her to the Valley Stream Drive house, where he forced her inside and attacked her at knife-point.

The man then drove the woman back to the Food Lion at 3151 Capital Blvd., where he used her EBT card to make a purchase, according to the warrant application. He left her at this point, and she went for treatment to Duke Raleigh Hospital, where she reported the crime.

Police used Food Lion security video and previous incident reports from 4720 Valley Stream Drive to identify Reese as the attacker, the warrant application states.

If Reese is released on bond, he is prohibited from any contact with the woman, according to court documents.
