GOLDSBORO, N.C. — A 13-year-old boy was shot early Monday in Goldsboro while committing a crime, according to police.

Around 2:30 a.m., officers with the Goldsboro Police Department responded to a shooting in the 400 block of Seymour Drive near Myers Avenue.

A 13-year-old boy suffering from gunshot wounds was transported to UNC Health Wayne, then transferred to ECU Health.

The child was listed in critical condition.

Goldsboro police said the boy committed a crime against a "known offender." The offender is cooperating with police, and no charges have been filed.

Some neighbors said they weren't surprised to learn of the shooting.

"I hate that it's common for a 13-year-old or a 15-year-old to get shot," said Kaneesha Battle-Cobb, who lives in the area. "Most of the kids I do know around here, I've known them since they were babies. To hear that one of those babies was harmed and hurt, it breaks my heart."

Limited details were available about what crime led to the shooting. Goldsboro police said ShotSpotter was used to locate where the shots were fired.

The investigation is ongoing.
