KINSTON, N.C. — Vice President Mike Pence spoke at a campaign rally in Kinston on Sunday night.

The rally was one day after at least four members of Pence's staff tested positive for coronavirus. CDC guidelines suggest Pence quarantine for 14 days.

During his speech, Pence spoke with a sense of urgency.

"We are coming to a time of choosing. The choice in this election has never been more clear, stakes have never been higher," he said to a group of supporters.

Dr. Amir Barzan, a family physician with UNC Health, said Pence should have canceled his appearance on Sunday.

"It is really important to know when he was in contact with staff members, the details of knowing when he was in contact with the staff member," said Barzan.

He added that there were several questions that needed to be asked to determine Pence's risk.

"How long was he exposed to the people around him? When was his last contact with them? There is a lot of other things we would want to know," explained Barzan.

White House officials said Pence decided to maintain his travel schedule because he is considered essential personnel.

"We are opening up America again. We are opening schools," Pence said during the rally.

On Sunday, Democratic vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris participated in a drive-in rally in Michigan.

Second lady Karen Pence will be in New Hill on Monday.
