DURHAM, N.C.Construction this weekend will close a portion of Alston Avenue starting Friday at 9 p.m., causing possible backups along the Durham Freeway (N.C. Highway 147).

A segment of South Alston Avenue (N.C. Highway 55) will be closed from Angier Avenue to the on and off ramps of N.C. 147 South. This will include the ramp that leads northbound Alston Avenue traffic on to N.C. 147 northbound.

The road will reopen at 6 a.m. on Monday, weather permitting.

The work comes as a contractor switches traffic from existing lanes to the future southbound lanes so permanent northbound lanes can be constructed.

Detour signs will be in place.

Detour for southbound drivers:
  • Drivers will be directed to Main Street, to Fayetteville Street, to N.C. 147 Southbound to Exit 2 for Alston Avenue.
Detour for northbound drivers:
  • Traffic will be directed to N.C. 147 southbound to the Briggs Avenue Exit (Exit 1) to N.C. 147 northbound to Exit 3A for Fayetteville Street to Main Street.

Additionally, the Durham Freeway off ramp to Alston Avenue will close Friday at 9 p.m. and is scheduled to reopen two weeks later once construction work on the ramp is complete.

Traffic for this closure will use the Fayetteville Street exit and Main Street.
