Howling Cow ice cream lovers are apparently flocking to local Harris Teeters to get their fix. News that 16 Harris Teeters are now selling NC State's very popular Howling Cow ice cream seems to have sent people straight to the store to grab a pint - or more. Soon after the ice cream went on sale late last week, customers were reporting empty freezer shelves.

"Please find out how often they plan to stock it. I went yesterday and it was all sold out," wrote one reader on Go Ask Mom's original post about the news.

"They need a bigger section in the stores," wrote somebody on WRAL-TV's Facebook page, who also shared a picture of a cleaned out shelf.

The ice cream is a longtime staple at NC State. For more than 70 years, Howling Cow has been manufactured on campus using fresh milk from the university's cows located at the NC State Dairy Farm on Lake Wheeler Road. Until now, the ice cream was only available on NC State's campus or at the NC State Fair.

But late last week, NC State announced that thanks to a licensing agreement, Howling Cow will be sold at select Harris Teeters in Wake County.

Now, through the agreement, Harris Teeter is manufacturing the ice cream that's sold at their stores in High Point, using Howling Cow's recipe and ingredients. Six flavors - Campfire Delight, Cookie Dough2, Chocolate Chip Mint, Cookies & Cream, Butter Almond and Cherry Brick Road - are available. NC State will use money from the licensing agreement to fund student scholarships and dairy and agriculture initiatives.

Will more ice cream be on the shelves for Howling Cow lovers? Will Harris Teeter start selling the ice cream beyond Wake County? I don't have all of the answers, but I can tell you that officials from both Harris Teeter and NC State are "overwhelmed." Here's what they tell me.

"The overwhelming demand for Howling Cow ice cream at local Harris Teeter stores has taken us by surprise.  We know that Harris Teeter is aware and responding to the situation," said Gary Cartwright, Director of the Dairy Enterprise System at NC State University.

Said Danna Robinson, Harris Teeter's communication manager: "We are overwhelmed and thrilled by the excitement surrounding Howling Cow Ice Cream. Our teams are working diligently to get more product out to our stores to meet the needs of our shoppers.'
