JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. — A woman and child were injured following a single-car crash Thursday evening in Johnston County.

Authorities said the 31-year-old woman was driving while impaired when her car left U.S. Highway 70 near N.C. Highway 42, struck a ditch and partially overturned just after 6 p.m.

Authorities said the woman, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was partially ejected from the vehicle. Authorities said she was pinned under the car and was extricated after about 20 minutes.

A 5-year-old child inside the car, who was not properly restrained in his car seat, was found lying against the rearview window of the overturned vehicle, troopers said.

The woman and child were taken to WakeMed with serious injuries, but their conditions were unknown.

Highway Patrol troopers said more than half a dozen open alcohol containers were found inside the vehicle.

Troopers said the woman will be charged with driving while impaired, misdemeanor child abuse, careless and reckless driving and a child restraint violation.

Authorities did not say how the woman and child are related.
