One person dead in Durham shooting on Horton Road near Guess Road

Durham police are investigating a fatal shooting Saturday afternoon.

DURHAM, N.C. — Durham police are investigating a fatal shooting Saturday afternoon.

Police responded to reports of a shooting after 3:30 p.m. in the 3800 block of Horton Road near Guess Road.

Upon arrival, officers found a man who had been shot. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The victim in this shooting has been identified as Gregory Wayne Headen, 53, of Durham.

"[It's] terrible," said Barbara Phillips, a witness to the aftermath. "I didn’t know that that was even happening, and I didn’t know it was actually happening right here. So [it's] a little scary."

Phillips said she saw the flashing lights and mobile command unit while walking to dinner in the area.

"It does surprise me," she said. "But it doesn’t surprise me that it happens in Durham. It’s everywhere now."

An investigation is underway.
