WAKE COUNTY, N.C. — Slush and ice covered some Wake County roadways on Monday, and the darkness of David Nizen's early morning commute quickly turned dangerous.

"(I) Came across what I thought at first was just snow on the road but it turned out to be a fairly large pine tree. I slammed on the brakes, laptop went flying," he said.

After calling emergency services for a large tree down on Pierce Olive Road, Nizen tried to warn other drivers.

"If someone had been injured I would've felt really really bad about that. It's the right thing to do," he said.

He stuck around, making use of his emergency supplies, including a flare.

"Who actually has flares in their cars these days? Well, I'm old-school, so I have flares in my car," he said.

On his dash camera, Nizen is seen waving a flare, trying to signal to others.

"As you can see in the video, I don't know what the issue was, but he just did not stop. He plowed right over that tree. He cleared the tree, damaged his Prius pretty badly. Lost his bumper," Nizen said.

Nizen's dash cam was rolling, capturing the tree get thrown toward him.

"I was ready to jump over it if I had to," he said.

Both Nizen and the driver were fine.

"If I could tell people anything in this kind of weather, just be safe, put the phone down and pay attention. Watch where you're going to, be aware of your surroundings. It's so important," he said.
