The North Carolina Zoo, which closed last week as Hurricane Florence began to bear down on the region, will remain closed to the public Monday for clean-up and repair.

Zoo officials will make a decision Monday afternoon about whether the Asheboro destination will open on Tuesday.

"All our animals and humans are safe and sound," according to the zoo's Facebook page.

The zoo's focus in the last week has been the safety of its staff and 1,600 animals.

They've herded flamingos.

And they also explained why some animals weren't brought inside.

"These guys know what to do in bad weather and they have a lot of space to find places that are safe in their habitat," said Jennifer Ireland, the zoo's curator of mammals, in a Facebook post.

The zoo is about 90 minutes from Raleigh.
