Nifong's guitars auctioned for $5K

Mike Nifong Out of Jail

Three guitars belonging to former Duke lacrosse prosecutor Mike Nifong were auctioned off for $5,100 Sunday afternoon.

Cindy Smith Auction & Estate Brokerage put a Fender Deluxe Nashville Telecaster, Martin D-41 and PRS Custom 24 on the auction block at 1 p.m. in Hillsborough.

The Martin and PRS – each with an original value of $3,000 – went to the upper range of what they were expected to bring in, drawing bids of $2,100 and $2,000, respectively.

The Fender exceeded by $250 the estimates of the $750 estimate of what it would be auctioned for.

The funds will go straight to the bankruptcy court.

Nifong filed for bankruptcy in January, listing a debt of $180.3 million. Almost all of that is estimated damages from pending civil litigation that stems from the 2006 case in which, as Durham district attorney, he had three Duke University lacrosse players indicted on false accusations of rape.

Nifong's bankruptcy filing meant he was temporarily protected from litigation, but a judge ruled earlier this year that the former Duke players could proceed with their cases against him.
