Raleigh, N.C. — The price for a first-class stamp will increase from 41 to 42 cents Monday.

Other U.S. Postal Service rates also will increase, such as international mail going from 90 to 94 cents and certified mail from $2.65 to $2.70.

The Postal Service has sold 5 billion "Forever" stamps in the past year and plans to have an additional 5 billion in stock to meet the expected demand before the price change. The stamps can be purchased at the current price and will be enough to cover first-class letters after the price increase.

“The Postal Service developed the 'Forever' stamp for consumers to ease the transition during price changes,” Postmaster General John Potter said in a statement. “We encourage Americans to buy 'Forever' stamps now for 41 cents because, like the name suggests, they are good forever.”

The "Forever" stamps also will increase in price on Monday.

Under a new law, the Postal Service will adjust its prices each May in future years.
