Possible Theft of Fayetteville Police Money Probed

Fayetteville Police Chief Tom Bergamine

The Fayetteville Police Department is investigating the possible embezzlement of departmental funds, police said Tuesday.

Police Chief Tom Bergamine said no other information about the case would be released.

“We understand there might be frustration on the part of the public with regard to the limited amount of information we are able to provide at this time," Bergamine said in a statement. "We would like to assure the public that we are taking appropriate measures in this matter and as with any other criminal investigation, we are striving to balance the rights of all potential suspects with the need to protect the sanctity and integrity of the investigation.”

Department spokesman Jamie Smith declined to specify how many employees were under investigation, whether they were civilians or uniformed officers and how much money was involved.
