RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina State University announced classroom and office moves on Monday for those who would have worked and studied in Poe Hall this spring.

Cancer-causing chemicals called PCBs were found during testing in Poe Hall in October, and the building was evacuated in November. Since that time, faculty and staff with offices in Poe Hall had to ask the university to remove and clean any items left behind.

For Spring 2024, the building will remain closed and classes scheduled there will be relocated.

"More than 230 classes for more than 4,000 students scheduled for the spring semester in Poe Hall were all reassigned to new locations for the start of the spring semester," the university said in a statement.

As of Jan. 4, 2024, there were no plans to completely clear out the building. Porous materials like chairs with fabric, personal belongings and other items deemed non-essential cannot be removed according to the university.

"Environmental testing and a building systems review are underway in Poe Hall," Warwick Arden, executive vice chancellor and provost, and Charles Maimone, executive vice chancellor for Finance and Administration, wrote in a letter to the campus community.
