NC school bus driver cited in crash: 9 children hospitalized, adult badly injured

Nine children were hospitalized Tuesday after a school bus crashed in Burke County.

HICKORY, N.C. — Nine children were hospitalized Tuesday after a school bus crashed in Burke County.

Around 7:25 a.m., troopers with the State Highway Patrol responded to a school bus crash on Johnson Bridge Road near Old N.C. Highway 10.

According to troopers, the bus driver was traveling west on Johnson Bridge Road, lost control, ran off the right side of the road, struck a ditch and overturned. The bus came to a rest on its top.

Officials said there were nine children and two adults on the bus, which transports children with handicaps to multiple schools in the Burke district. The children were taken to hospitals in the area with non-life-threatening injuries.

The bus driver was hospitalized with minor injuries.

According to SHP, the second adult on the bus became trapped and was transported by medical helicopter to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte in serious condition.

The driver of the school bus was cited for failure to maintain lane control.
