LELAND, N.C. — A man accused of impersonating a police officer in Brunswick County was convicted Monday night.

Eric Cinotti maintains his innocence and entered a rare Alford Plea, meaning he didn't admit to the crimes, but realizes the evidence against him is too great. Regardless, he is considered guilty in the eyes of the law.

Cinotti was arrested last summer after showing up to an emergency call in Leland wearing a badge, gun and bulletproof vest.

Leland police officers were suspicious of his behavior, and started asking questions, which led to Cinotti's arrest.

Cinotti said he had basic law enforcement training but was not a certified officer. While he refused to speak to WECT News on camera, he did provide documents detailing his military experience.

Cinotti claims that at the time he was volunteering with the Navassa Police Department because they were short staffed. He claims the department issued him a badge and police vehicle, and says he still doesn't understand why he was charged with impersonating an officer since he was operating under the authority of the town police chief.

Navassa is a neighbor to the town of Leland.

Cinotti won't have to do any jail time, but he's now a convicted felon, barring him from carrying a gun or ammunition.
