RALEIGH, N.C. — Areas in central North Carolina were under a severe thunderstorm warning Sunday night as storms are expected to roll through the area until about 2 a.m.

Storms were rolling through Alamance, Chatham, Person and Durham counties at about 11 p.m., but widespread storms were not expected.

"The big problem we will see over teh next few hours is heavy rainfall," said WRAL meteorologist Mike Maze.

Monday could be stormy as well, with activity tapering off in the early morning hours and picking back up again by late morning.

"Even around 8 a.m. there could still be some activity around," Maze said. "So, for your morning commute it will be cloudy with some light rain."

Monday will be humid, with highs in the mid 80s, before things warm up more for Tuesday.

"A greater risk for severe weather comes on Tuesday when that second front comes on in," Maze said.

Highs on Tuesday top out near 90 degrees.

7-Day Forecast

A chance for rain and thunderstorms continues through Wednesday. But the lhe later part of the week should be less humid and drier.
