At 76 degrees, Triangle ties temperature record set 23 years ago
As rain moves out Monday afternoon, the Triangle could come close to beating an old heat record.
Posted — UpdatedAs of Monday afternoon, the temperature logged at the National Weather Service's reporting station of Raleigh-Durham International Airport reached 76 degrees, tying a record set in 1996.
And the region could shatter the record if temperatures continue to rise.
The morning rain that coated area streets has largely moved out and drier conditions are on tap.
"The rain is over," WRAL meteorologist Kat Campbell said.
After Monday, it will be a clear, dry week. Temperatures will be in the upper 50s to lower 60s on Tuesday and milder on Wednesday, with a high around 55 degrees.
According to Gardner, although the middle of the week will be cooler than Monday, temperatures will still be above normal for the start of the new year.
Temperatures will be coldest Tuesday and Wednesday nights, when lows drop into the low 30s, but the days will stay mild.
A chance for rain could return Friday, but temperatures will warm up into the mid 60s again for Friday and Saturday.
