This week, we meet Jamila Martin, a physical therapist from Fuquay-Varina. Check out our Q&A with her below.

What’s your name, and in what part of the Triangle do you spend most of your time?
Jamila Martin, I spend most of my time in Fuquay Varina, N.C.
Tell us a little about your family and one activity you enjoy together.
I am married with a baby boy who is 17 months, a ball of energy. We enjoy taking him to parks or indoor playgrounds.
Tell us about your career journey and how you ended up in your current position.
I have been a physical therapist for 16 years and a pelvic health physical therapist for six years. I enjoy the satisfaction of helping individuals return to their quality of life. I ended up with Origin because I love the fact that they are raising so much awareness of pelvic health in the community and wanting to make it more accessible.
What’s your favorite activity to do with your family?
Traveling and watching movies
What do you love about parenting as a career-minded mother?
I really love that my son can see his mother striving to be great.
What’s the number one reason moms visit a DPT for pelvic floor health, and what encouragement do you have for them?
The number one reason moms visit a pelvic health specialist is to get their life back! I constantly hear moms report limited social gatherings, or feel insecure about having to wear panty liners because they are constantly worried about having urinary leakage. My motto is always: just because it is common does not mean it is normal.
Tell us about a challenge you’ve overcome as a mother in the workplace.
I think a challenge that is hard to overcome is balancing it all. It can be tough balancing working full-time and being a full-time mother.
What are you passionate about outside of work and family?
Self care and spending time with my girlfriends. It is really important to pour into yourself as well because you cannot pour from an empty cup.
What is one book, podcast, article, social media account, blog or other resource you can recommend for moms?
The Art of Good Enough: The Working Mom’s Guilt Free Guide to Thriving While Being Perfectly Imperfect
If you have a favorite go-to spot in the Triangle, what is it?
My husband and I are foodies and enjoy It's a Southern Thing in Durham and Firebirds.
Is there anything else you’d like to share?
It’s important for mothers to remember that while their bodies changed during pregnancy, they don’t have to live with a “less than” pelvic health quality. Incontinence and pain don’t have to be normal, and I’m here to help. Origin, located in Cary, is all about normalizing pelvic floor health, and I’m so proud to be part of that mission.
