Man shot, taken to hospital from standoff with authorities in Scotland Neck

The sheriff's office said James Melvin Lee Jr. was shot by Halifax County lieutenant J. Bozard. Lee, 62, was airlifted to the hospital and is in critical condition.

SCOTLAND NECK, N.C. — A man is in the hospital after a standoff with police and deputies in Scotland Neck ended in a shooting.

According to the chief of the Scotland Neck Police Department, authorities began negotiating with the man at 2:50 p.m. near the intersection of Edwards Fork Road and Grasunan Road. Authorities said the man, James Melvin Lee Jr., was making threats and at one point, a handgun was displayed. Police officers and Halifax deputies responded.

The sheriff's office said Lee was shot by Halifax County lieutenant J. Bozard. Lee, 62, was airlifted to the hospital and is in critical condition.

The police chief said the shooting occurred during the negotiation around 5:45 p.m. It is unclear who fired shots first.

Investigators searched inside a white pickup truck in a yard near the intersection.

The SBI is investigating.
