Man killed in crash during high-speed chase in Caldwell County

At 10:45 p.m., the NC State Highway Patrol responded to a fatal crash on Playmore Beach Road near Packs Hill Road. It was determined that a car was traveling west on Playmore Beach Road when the driver veered off the road and struck a tree.

LENOIR, N.C. — A Caldwell County man was killed in a crash during a high-speed chase late Wednesday night.

At 10:45 p.m., the NC State Highway Patrol responded to a fatal crash on Playmore Beach Road near Packs Hill Road. It was determined that a car was traveling west on Playmore Beach Road when the driver veered off the road and struck a tree. 

The driver, Michael Scott Skelton, 41, of Lenoir, died at the scene. At the time of the crash, Skelton was being pursued by the Caldwell County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators said speed and reckless driving were factors that contributed to the crash.
