Man faces 5 felony charges after 18-year-old shot in back, gun seized

An 18-year-old was shot in the back early Thursday in Halifax County, and a man is in custody.

ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. — An 18-year-old was shot in the back early Thursday in Halifax County, and a man is in custody.

According to the Halifax County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to a shooting along Deer Run Drive, near the South Rosemary community. A caller said the 18-year-old was shot inside a home.

The victim was transported to ECU North Hospital and later transferred to a trauma center, where he was listed in critical condition.

Investigators searched a home on Deer Run Drive, which led to the arrest of Kevin Macias.

Macias was charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon resulting in serious bodily injury, felony possession of firearm by felon, felony discharge weapon into occupied property, felony possession of marijuana, felony possession with intent to sell marijuana and misdemeanor go armed to the terror of people.

A weapon and marijuana were seized.

Macias was being held without a bond with a court date scheduled for Feb. 22.
