Family of man who died in police custody 'wants answers, justice'
The family of a man killed while in the custody of Raleigh police demanded an independent review of the case on Saturday during a march.
Posted — UpdatedRaleigh police officers conducted a traffic stop around 10 p.m. Wednesday in the 400 block of Rose Lane. Two men were taken into custody on drug-related charges.
While in custody, Curtis Roeman Mangum, 32, started to have a medical emergency. Officers called paramedics, who took the man to WakeMed.
Mangum died several hours later. Police did not release the nature of the medical emergency.
"I don't know what exactly happened, but it's heartbreaking to know I don't have a father anymore," said Mangum's daughter, Zanyah Mangum.
Mangum's family and a crowd of supporters marched to the Raleigh Police Departments' southeast headquarters, but the department has not commented on the family's complaints.
"We want answers. We want justice for Curtis," said Andrea Jones, a family friend.
Family members said they were not aware of any medical conditions Curtis Mangum suffered from.
The State Bureau of Investigation and the police department are both conducting an internal review.
A five-day report will be sent to the city manager next week, according to the Raleigh police chief.
