Man charged in fatal Fayetteville crash where minivan rear-ended Fort Liberty soldier on e-bike

The e-bike was in the left lane on Reilly Road and traveling toward Morganton Road in the area of Cliffbourne Drive. Police said the soldier was rear-ended by the minivan.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — An active-duty soldier at Fort Liberty was killed in a crash involving an e-bike and a minivan in Fayetteville.

Around 7:17 p.m. on Jan. 10, Fayetteville officers responded to the 300 block of Reilly Road and Cliffbourne Drive following the crash.

John Nicholson was riding an e-bike in the left lane on Reilly Road and traveling toward Morganton Road in the area of Cliffbourne Drive and was rear-ended by the minivan.

Nicholson died on Thursday at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. He was 30 years old.

On Monday, police said Robert Damron was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle, driving on revoked license and failure to reduce speed in connection with the crash.

Damron, 61, turned himself in at the Cumberland County Detention Center and received a $50,000 unsecured bond.
