Julian Grace joined WRAL-TV's news team this spring as a reporter and weekend evening news anchor. It was a big decision for the Indianapolis native, who left his hometown where he worked for WISH-TV, and his wife and four children to pick up and move to North Carolina. But, he tells me, they're excited for the opportunities here in the Triangle and beyond.

As we wrap up our June features of local dads, we checked in with Grace to learn more about him, his family and fatherhood. Here's a Q&A.

Go Ask Mom: You've left your hometown of Indianapolis and made a big move to Raleigh. Welcome! What are you most looking forward to as you and your family get acclimated to the Triangle?
Julian Grace: Yes, a very big move! We didn’t make this decision lightly. As we did our research, we came to the conclusion that Raleigh surpassed many of our desires as a family. After much prayer and counsel, we pulled the trigger, and we have been very pleased as a family. Collectively, we are excited about seeing the mountains and spending days at the beach. As a family, we always seek opportunities to create new memories, and North Carolina is the perfect backdrop for a new adventure.

GAM: You have four kids! What's been the biggest surprise so far as a father? What do you wish you knew years ago as a new dad?
JG: Wow, the biggest surprise? I would say how each child is wired. They have their own unique personality. For instance, we used one technique to teach our daughter how to do addition; however, for our son, we had to use a totally different strategy.

And that’s OK.

Since being a father, I’ve strived to give my children a childhood that they would not have to recover from. During the process, I’ve been worried about making mistakes. Through time, I’ve realized no dad is perfect, and it’s OK to fall, just make sure you get back up.

GAM: What's been the biggest challenge raising a family in today's really busy world?
JG: Time...time... time...did I mention time? LOL. Working in news can be very demanding. So I try to be very intentional in spending time with my children.

I have a goal to spend individual time with each child every month. Nothing too elaborate, sometimes that may include a slushy with dad or allowing them to pick an activity. Then, there are times I will gear something to each child’s individual interest such as going to see Lion King on Broadway or going to a Tripp Lee concert.

During those one-on-one dates, I learn more about each child’s likes, which creates another intersection of conversations with them because I can talk in depth with them specifically about their interest.

Do I accomplish this goal each month? No, but it is definitely on my agenda.

GAM: How has being a father changed the way you thought about the stories you have covered over the years?
JG: Good question. No matter the story, I always think that this is someone’s child. It challenges me to see my child in their eyes and think, how would I want my child to be treated in this situation?

GAM: What's your recipe for a perfect day with your family?
JG: Just being together. It may sound crazy, but I enjoy us all just running errands together. I’m grateful whenever all six of us can share the same space. My wife is a great mother, so she usually creates the perfect day for our family.

Lastly, I’ve also benefited from great parents who are consistently consistent, and that is what I’m shooting for — consistency.

When parenting, I try to remind myself of James 4:14, “that life is only a vapor,” knowing that I try to make my impact as a father count. So make it count!

Go Ask Mom features local moms every Monday. But in June, we feature local dads in honor of Father's Day.
